Prospective students who do not meet the normal admission criteria to enter the university's programs may be eligible for entry under special criteria. Preparatory programs in academic areas and English language are available to international students. A number of scholarships also assist the entry of students to the university.

Oodgeroo Unit

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may apply for entry to the university through an alternate entry program. Entry through the Oodgeroo Unit occurs either in conjunction with the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), or most postgraduate courses via the PG-Form.

School-leavers and mature-age entrants may apply for entry through QTAC, and apply at the same time for consideration by the special Assessment and Selection program.

As well as assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to enter the university, the Oodgeroo Unit provides academic and personal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the university.

Low-income background

The Q-Step program is a special access program which provides increased opportunities and support for people from low-income families who wish to enter the University's undergraduate courses. Applications for special consideration are invited from current year 12 students and from prospective mature-age students.

Elite athletes

QUT has been recognised as an "Elite Athlete Friendly" University, by both the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Sports Commission. Assisted by the Student Guild Office, QUT offers an Elite Athlete Program for students who wish to pursue both academic and sporting futures. QUT recognises the demand on elite athletes through training and competition, and offers these students flexibility with admissions, enrolment, assessment and special consideration where possible.
