QUT’s Student Inclusion/Future Students team, which aims to widen participation in higher education and promote inclusive environments for all students, hosted an inspiring event on Friday, 5 July, in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Students and carers from the Pyjama Foundation were welcomed to the Kelvin Grove campus for a day filled with cultural workshops and enriching experiences.
The Pyjama Foundation aims to break the cycle of disadvantage faced by children and young people from out-of-home care backgrounds. By thoughtfully matching trained volunteer mentors who meet regularly with children in care to engage in learning-based activities, the foundation provides them with significant adult relationships that positively impact their life trajectories.

During their QUT visit, students and their carers engaged in cultural workshops including a Didgeridoo workshop run by Didgeridoo Festivals and a Boomerang painting session with Auntie Roma. These activities were designed to celebrate and immerse participants in rich cultural traditions, both engaging educational experiences.
The day began with a warm Welcome to Country, followed by addresses from Bronwyn Sheehan, CEO and Founder of the Pyjama Foundation, and a QUT student ambassador who shared inspirational insights about their journey at university. This event continues the Student Inclusion teams’ longstanding collaborative support for the Pyjama Foundation. By hosting such events, QUT provides opportunities to demystify higher education and promotes engagement, learning, and cultural exchange, ensuring that all students feel valued and included.
