The QUT School of Nursing and the Metro North Health Nursing and Midwifery Academy has been established to achieve the highest standard of care for the community and enable innovation in practice through education and research.

The academy is characterised by shared governance, collaborative activities, seamless integration, and mutual benefits which ultimately optimises health service delivery and health outcomes for the Metro North Health community.

The Alan Mackay-Sim Spinal Cord Injury Travelling Fellowship 

2021

Frontline clinical nurses with great ideas for service improvement can now partner with expert nurse researchers who will coach and mentor them over a 12-month research internship and scholarship. This benefits patients and hospitals and provides nurses with professional development and career progression opportunities, offering a pathway to PhD study.

The fellowship was established to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for people with a spinal cord injury (SCI).

Our priority areas

1 - Support

The objective of priority 1 is to establish the governance and infrastructure to effectively operationalise the academy.

2 - Entry to practice

The objective of priority 2 is to promote and strengthen entry to practice activities to build nursing and midwifery workforce capability that contributes to excellence in care.

Key strategies

  • Implementing and evaluating contemporary models of clinical placement to enhance the student and staff experience and support organisational objectives.
  • Implementing and evaluating strategies to advance the student clinical facilitator model.
  • Fostering collaboration in research which addresses clinical placement, entry to practice and graduate year related priorities in nursing and midwifery.
  • Identifying opportunities to promote nursing and midwifery as a career choice.
  • Identifying potential opportunities during university programs to support progression and integration of learning into practice environments, e.g. cadetships, USIN/USIM positions.

3 - Postgraduate teaching, learning and professional education

The objective of priority 3 is to enhance engagement in postgraduate lifelong learning to ensure a highly capable and sustainable nursing and midwifery workforce.

The academy partnership between QUT School of Nursing and Metro North Nursing and Midwifery is about building university and industry partnerships and providing professional education and career progression opportunities.

Through the long-standing collaborations underpinning the academy, professional education resources such as the Queensland Health Guide for University-Industry Integration have been developed and adopted.

4 - Research in action

The objective of priority 4 is to strengthen the impact of nursing and midwifery research health service outcomes.

Research at the academy is about strengthening the impact of nursing and midwifery research health service outcomes, through key strategies:

Grow collaborative research initiatives to advance nursing and midwifery practice

  • Foster collaboration in research which addresses health service priorities.
  • Promote the translation of research into practice.
  • Encourage international, national, and state-wide collaborative partnership in research activities.
  • Promote enrolment in Higher Research Degree (HRD) studies.
  • Build research capacity within nursing and midwifery.

Build research capacity within nursing and midwifery

  • Increase engagement in joint research and research capacity building activities.
  • Devise strategies to support capacity building initiatives e.g. Internships; workshops; dissemination.
  • Foster research prowess and investigation.
  • Work collaboratively with other project leads to advance and stakeholders to promote the application of evidence to advance translation of research outcomes into practice.
