Embarking on a higher-degree research journey can be both rewarding and challenging. Recently, on the Research Culture Uncovered podcast, QUT language and learning educator Natasha Kitano, along with former PhD students Kirsten Baird-Bate and Owen Forbes, shared their insights and unique perspectives on postgraduate research and mental health. Here are our top 10 takeaways to help you navigate any challenges you might encounter during your PhD journey.

  1. Adopt a Holistic Wellbeing Approach
Embrace a comprehensive health and wellbeing strategy that addresses mental, social, relational, and environmental wellbeing. Look for resources like self-paced resilience modules and mental wellbeing programs developed by the QUT Health and Wellbeing team.
  2. Balance Personal Life and Studies
Managing family responsibilities alongside your research can be challenging. Create a productive environment and develop effective time management strategies to balance your personal and academic life.
  3. Stay Connected
Maintain a sense of community and connectedness, especially if you study remotely. Participate in online support groups and activities to stay engaged with your peers and reduce feelings of isolation.
  4. Participate in Structured Writing Sessions
Join structured writing sessions such as “Shut Up and Write” workshops. These sessions can help you stay focused, tackle performance anxiety, and overcome procrastination.
  5. Engage in Proactive Wellbeing Initiatives
Take part in wellbeing initiatives focusing on mental health discussions and creating supportive environments. Proactive approaches to wellbeing can significantly enhance your academic experience.
  6. Seek Professional Support
Don’t hesitate to seek professional support if needed.QUT offers free counselling services for all current students, including international students. If your first experience isn’t positive, keep looking until you find a counsellor you connect with.
  7. Normalise Mental Health Conversations
Engage in open discussions about mental health with your peers. Sharing your challenges and hearing others’ experiences can help normalise these conversations and foster a supportive community.
  8. Empower Yourself and Your Peers
Take an active role in shaping your academic experience. Advocate for your needs and support your peers in doing the same. Empowerment and advocacy can build confidence and resilience.
  9. Utilise University Resources
Make full use of the resources available at your university, such as writing spaces, online modules, and wellbeing programs. These resources are designed to support your academic and personal growth.
  10. Develop a Writing Routine
Establish a regular writing routine to enhance productivity. Participate in writing sprints and create a dedicated writing schedule to stay on track with your research goals.

Remember, taking care of your mental and emotional health while striving for academic success is important 💙
