Tamara Orth, PhD student at the Centre for Data Science

Emelie Dahlskold, 4 November, 2022 | Tamara Orth, PhD student at the Centre for Data Science

Tamara’s aspiration is to use her data science skills and in-depth knowledge of both artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to bridge the gap between technology development and human values. Find out how postgraduate IT study at QUT is helping her achieve her career goal.

Tamara studied law in Germany and Portugal, expanding her skillset in mediation, holistic health, and elderly care, before commencing her Master of Information Technology studies at QUT. When researching her postgraduate options, she was impressed by the location and facilities of the Gardens Point campus and the flexibility of the course structure:

“I chose QUT because of the units and electives, and the flexibility to arrange the course to accommodate the skills that I already have and the interests I want to pursue,” Tamara says.

During her postgraduate studies, Tamara made the most of her study experience. As part of her involvement in the QUT Business Analysis and Data Science Club (QUT BANDS), she expanded her professional network and developed invaluable hands-on skills.

QUT BANDS runs a series of social, industry and professional development events throughout the year with the aim to bridge the gap between industry and QUT student community, particularly in the fields of IT, Business and Data Science.

After graduating with a Master of Information Technology, majoring in Data Science, Tamara commenced her PhD studies in the QUT Centre for Data Science. In her research, Tamara investigates if and how machine learning can inform decision-making in the ICU, by taking a human-centred approach before matching ICU needs to ICU data.
