Emelie Dahlskold, 2 September, 2022 | QUT graduates Kimberly, Thomas, Holly and Sebastian
Studying STEM at QUT opens a world of opportunities to achieve your full potential and forge a rewarding career.
Many of the jobs of today were unheard of a decade ago: app developers, big data analysts and sustainability engineers. With the rise of new tech like blockchain, nanosensors and renewable energy sources, the jobs of tomorrow will be redefined.
Our graduates are out there using their STEM knowledge and training to make a difference in the world in which we live. Hear from some of our recent graduates:
Kimberly: Graduate Front End Developer
Course: Bachelor of Information Technology / Bachelor of Creative Industries
Current job: Graduate Front End Developer, Deloitte Digital
Kimberly Valenny connected with industry representatives from Deloitte Digital at a ‘Women in STEM Industry Night’ hosted by the Women in Tech student club. Two years later she scored an internship with the same company and is now thriving in her role as Graduate Front End Developer.
So why should you join a student club and network at uni? Here’s what Kimberly says:
“When you surround yourself with people who will support you and have been in your shoes before, you gain a feeling of confidence you wouldn’t have found anywhere else.”

Holly: 3D Artist
Course: Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments / Bachelor of Business
Current job: 3D Artist, Gameloft Brisbane
QUT animation and marketing graduate Holly Noble has always dreamed of amazing worlds. She originally wanted to be an astrophysicist and study space, but now she has the qualifications and skills – and an exciting new job – to create 3D worlds for gamers.
“One of my uni projects was in a student showcase at the end of last year and some of the Gameloft representatives came along. Their Brisbane art director, Liz Ballantyne, was there and she got my details and asked for my Instagram so that she could follow my work. A couple of months later she contacted me to come in from an interview – and I got the job!”

Sebastian: Research Assistant
Course: Bachelor of Science (Honours)
Current job: Research Assistant, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute
During his Honours year, Sebastian Raison got a taste of what working in research could be like. He realised it was all about problem-solving and coming up with solutions to challenges that no one has addressed before.
He’s now working as a research assistant at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute where his data simulation skills and insights have helped inform the COVID-19 policy decisions.
“One of our questions with the border opening was: if we left it a little longer, would that help? The answer ultimately was no. Opening the border later would have just delayed the same outcome (…) Everything I do, I keep in mind how it is going to be used in practice.”
