QUT is committed to ensuring the relevance and quality of our courses. As part of this process, the Master of Information Technology has recently been reviewed and refreshed based on valuable feedback from students, academics, and industry professionals and has successfully been reaccredited for seven years, effective from 1 January 2025.
New majors tailored for industry demand
The new version of Master of Information Technology offers nine majors to choose from:
- Artificial Intelligence NEW
- Internet of Things NEW
- IT Management NEW
- Process Analytics and Automation
- Computer Science
- Cyber Security

All majors have undergone significant updates. Three new, future-focused majors—Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Human-Centered Design—have been introduced to meet the industry's demand for these skills. What other improvements have been made?
Advanced core curriculum for postgrad-level competence
A new Advanced Core curriculum has been created for all students. This program focuses on essential skills needed for high-level careers in the IT industry.
The Master of Information Technology now covers topics like Machine Learning, which helps computers learn from data; Human-Centred Design, ensuring technology is user-friendly; Cyber Security and Governance, which protects information and systems; Software Life Cycle Management, overseeing the development of software from start to finish; and an Introduction to Research, which teaches students how to explore and gather knowledge in the field.
Enhanced work-integrated learning (WIL) experience
One of the major updates to the program is the extension of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) from one semester to two. This increased practical experience will equip you with not only the necessary knowledge but also the skills and experience needed to thrive in your career, making them industry-ready.
PhD pathway for high-performing students
From 2026, the degree will also offer an optional pathway to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). High-performing students can undertake a research-related WIL capstone project that prepares them for Doctoral Degree entry.
Enhanced support for students without an IT background
The foundation semester for students from non-IT backgrounds has been greatly enhanced by a teaching approach that promotes more interaction in class and lightens the amount of work for assessments.
