Are you curious about careers in science and contemplating a Bachelor of Science at uni?

We partnered with Careers with STEM to bring you insights from three scientists at different stages of their careers. Meet our panellists:

Here are five essential tips to guide you on your path to a successful science career, drawing directly from the experts.

1. Find your community

University life can be overwhelming, especially in a diverse field like science. Dr Michael Cownley highlights that a vital tip is to "find your community and whether that's through study groups, clubs, peers in your tutorials, whatever it might be, [it's a] massive help". Building connections with like-minded individuals provides support, encouragement, and collaborative learning opportunities.

2. Get involved early

Don't wait to immerse yourself in the world of science. "Ask questions, go to workshops, go to your lectures," says Michael. Universities offer many free support services, so take advantage of these resources to enhance your understanding and navigate university expectations.

3. Develop good time management habits

Time management is crucial for success in university. Creating a plan, whether independently or with support, helps maintain focus and stay on track. Transitioning from a structured school environment to the independence of uni requires self-discipline and effective planning.

4. Look out for scholarships

Sabrina, a double degree student and start-up founder, advises, "look out for scholarships". Identifying scholarship opportunities early in year 12 can provide motivation and a clear goal. Knowing the required ATAR scores can drive you to achieve your best throughout the year. Scholarships can also open doors to valuable mentoring and networking opportunities.

5. Figure out your learning style

Understanding how you learn best is essential for academic success. Jodie shares, "figure out the way that you learn". Experiment with different study methods to identify what works for you, whether it's hands-on activities or visual aids. Recognising your learning style empowers you to absorb information effectively.
