Biography
Andrew Lui holds a PhD in spatial data modelling from the Australian National University and a BSc (Hons) in computer science and physics from the University of Sydney. Prior to joining the QUT, Andrew worked for 21 years as an academic and administrator at the Open University of Hong Kong. He received OUHK Teaching Excellence Award, IBM Faculty Award, and other recognitions there. Also, he coached many award-winning student teams at inter-university project competitions and programming contests. His early career saw him working as a research scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Organization and a researcher at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.Andrew’s research interests include computational intelligence, spatial-temporal data modelling, evolutionary computing, deep learning, educational technology, and computer science education. Some recent topics are pedestrian trajectory prediction, traffic flow modelling, active learning for efficient label acquisition, and car crash blackspots in a road network. Andrew enjoys solving problems with his programming skills in Python, Java, C, Javascript, SQL, and Android, knowledge in algorithms and hardware, and experience in web application frameworks like Spring MVC, Flask, and Strut, distributed systems like ROS, cloud computing, and natural interaction.
