Biography
Dr Amy Spooner is a Research Fellow with the Cancer and Palliative Care Outcomes Centre, School of Nursing and the Centre for Healthcare Transformation, Faculty of Health at Queensland University of Technology and is a Visiting Fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Amy is a registered nurse with over 10 year’s specialist experience in critical care, including six years as a Nurse Researcher with roles in education, quality and safety. Amy has successfully secured multiple grant funds to carry out investigator-led research, presented papers at international and national conferences, and has 26 papers published in peer reviewed journals. Her recent work in handover communication led to the implementation of two evidence-based electronic handover tools for bedside and senior nurse shift-to-shift handover. Based on her research an educational video for standard six of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards is published on the Queensland Health Electronic Publishing service (QHEPS) intranet which is accessed by the state. Amy has a range of research experience examining early warning systems, lung volumes and ventilation distribution using different modes of oxygen therapy, skin perfusion relating to pressure injuries, intravascular device securement, health service evaluation and is managing a national trial investigating non-pharmacological interventions for chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy. Currently her research focus is aged care with interests in nurse-led models, acute deterioration and palliative and end of life care in aged care facilities. Recently she successfully secured a grant for the development of an early warning score for acute deterioration in residential aged care.Publications
