Biography
The core focus of my work is making a difference through differences that matter (Barad, 2007) to marginalised young people, their teachers, schools and communities, as well as my own undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am dedicated to creative, yet robust forms of research which enable marginalised young people to work towards more hopeful futures than those suggested by the ‘at risk’ and ‘disengaged’ policy tags. I recently developed a new research methodology called youth-adult participatory action research, or YAPAR (Howell, 2023). Embedded in Fraser’s conceptualisation of justice as parity of participation, coupled with Freire’s notion of intergenerational dialogue and a critical-democratic conceptualisation of engagement, YAPAR dovetails the idea of youth-adult partnership with the unmistakably pedagogical methodology of youth participatory action research to facilitate explicit tripartite relationships between students, teachers and researchers as they become co-investigators and co-learners within a community of praxis. A documentary film produced about the pilot project of this new methodology can be accessed here: https://research.qut.edu.au/yapar/My teaching experience has related primarily to sociology of education, teachers as researchers, and creativity (The Arts) in education, however I am currently developing a new unit that focuses on teaching in flexible/alternative learning settings. I actively incorporate my key research interest of substantive engagement in meaningful learning into my teaching practice, as opportunities for deep engagement within an inclusive learning environment are as important for preservice teachers as they are for their future students. Using reflexive and innovative approaches that actively strive to embody the productive pedagogies framework, I strive to create safe yet intellectually challenging spaces in which students are able to develop new proficiencies, their intellectual curiosity and philosophies of teaching, as well as their evolving professional identities as teachers.
