Biography
Dr Annalese Semmler is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy within the School of Clinical Science, Faculty of Health. She undertook her PhD at the University of Queensland’s Institute of Molecular Biosciences (IMB) focusing on the molecular characterisation of virulence factors produced by the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the completion of her PhD in 1998, she completed several successive postdoctoral positions encompassing research areas that include bacterial pathogenesis, lung diseases (cancer and COPD), pharmacogenomics and cardiovascular disease.Dr Semmler began teaching in the QUT Pharmacy discipline in 2011 and has provided guest presentations in the Schools of Biomedical Sciences and Nursing. Her teaching areas cover numerous topics including cardiovascular and renal disease, neurology, mental health, cancer, pharmacogenomics, cell signaling, respiratory disease, future therapeutics, research skills and organisational strategies. She has also developed online educational modules on personilised medicine for health professionals.
Apart from teaching, Dr Semmler also leads the Molecular Human Cardiac Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics Research Group focusing on:
1). Pharmacogenomics - how our genetic material affects our response to medications for conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer and mental health and
2). Molecular processes (signaling pathways) by which pharmacological therapies are effective in treating heart disease and
3). Evaluating critical thinking strategies in higher education
