Dr Bernadette Hyland-Wood

Biography

Dr. Bernadette Hyland-Wood is a Chief Investigator in the QUT Centre for Data Science and co-leads the Responsible Data Science and AI Program. She is a Chief Investigator in the Computational Communication and Culture Program in QUT's Digital Media Research Centre. She is a Lecturer specialising in computational methods and data ethics within the School of Communication.

Bernadette’s research examines public data policy and digital communications during crises. It also examines formal and informal dynamics and novel data collection and sharing approaches during crises. These contributions draw on theory and applied research in data ethics, AI, organisational culture and transformation.

Her contributions include highly cited applied research on crisis communications (COVID-19), restoring public trust, national data legislation, and the U.S. DATA Act. She has published on these topics in academic journals, including Humanities and Social Sciences Communications and Springer Nature. Her research has featured in various media outlets, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), and Radio New Zealand. Bernadette chaired the W3C Government Linked Data Working Group as an invited expert and co-created international data standards (Linked Data, DCAT, CUBE, ORG), and best practices as a  member of the W3C.

She earned a PhD from the School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland (UQ, 2021) and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours equiv) in Computational Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
