Biography
BackgroundDoctor of Philosophy in the field of Sociology of Health and Illness, University of Queensland 1997 Professor of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology Professor Glenn Gardner leads a program of research into health service innovation and advanced nursing roles. Her 2004 research into the role of nurse practitioners resulted in development of practice, education and authorisation standards for nurse practitioners in Australia. These standards were adopted nationally by nurse regulatory authorities and education providers and laid a foundation for ongoing nurse practitioner standards review and development. Professor Gardner was lead researcher on the landmark ARC funded, Australia wide nurse practitioner study (AUSPRAC). The study was conducted in collaboration with leading nurse policy makers and the findings translated to a framework for implementation, audit and evaluation of nurse practitioner service. Subsequent projects examined safety and quality of nurse practitioner service and nurse practitioner service and patient outcomes in emergency care and renal care. Central to this research program is Professor Gardner’s work in generic advanced practice nursing roles and practice profiles. In collaboration with industry bodies and other leading researchers in this field Professor Gardner is conducting national and trans-Tasman research that is developing news tools and ways of thinking about advanced practice nursing and its contribution to improving the reach and quality of health service and patient outcomes. Professor Gardner also has a strong track record in acute care nursing practice and research. She conceptualized and implemented the inaugural nursing professional unit (NPU) at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. The NPU was established as an innovation to strengthen university /health service collaboration and to build and promote a clinical nursing research and evidence based practice culture. There are now three successful QUT Nursing Professorial Units at the Royal Brisbane and Woman's Hospital. Professor Gardner’s program of research includes a large cohort of research higher degree students conducting cutting edge research into nurse practitioner and advanced practice nursing service with several PhD candidates funded through NHMRC post graduate scholarships.
