Biography

Associate Professor Kathi Holt-Damant is a consultant architect and urban designer, originally from South Africa, working on problems relating to the urbanisation of culture and the impact on urban resources [land, water, infrastructure, mass transit, energy, resilience, food production and urban housing]. She has a particular focus on designing urban space systems that enhance the environment and build strong, healthy communities. She has delivered design research programs at the University of Melbourne, RMIT University, The University of Queensland and Columbia University [New York]. Dr Holt-Damant has been an invited critic at CU [NY], The New School Parsons School of Design [NY], Sci Arc [LA], University of Leuven [Belgium] and the University of Auckland [NZ]. She coordinates a student exchange programme funded jointly by the European Union and Australian Government to ‘Design Architectural and Urban Education for Climate Change’ involving six universities [ETSAB Barcelona, ENSA Toulouse, Politecnico Torino, QUT, UTS and RMIT]. She advises government and industry groups on a range of urban best practice initiatives. She has served on the QLD State Government’s Task Force for Transit-oriented development and currently sits on the Board of the Urban Design Alliance for Queensland [UDAL]. She is currently working with higher degree research students and coursework masters students.

Details: Appointed as the Academic Representative on the Coordinator General's Transit Oriented Development [TOD] Task Force.The TOD task force was formed in 2005 to advise State Government on all matters relating to Transit-oriented development in SEQ. All stakeholder groups were represented on the taskforce and met monthly until 2009 when it was disbanded.The SEQ Regional Plan was first implemented in 2005 and was the first legislative tool to address urban sprawl by advocating transit related development patterns.

Details: AASA comprises 22 Schools of Architecture in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.In 2005 Brisbane [UQ & QUT] hosted the biennial conference. I co-chaired the conference committee, and edited the Journal of refereed conference papers.

Details: Led a winning competition entry from Brisbane City in the Urban Best Practice Area special exhibition at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.The design combined an experimental green wall with a high-end multi capable digital wall to produce a typically QLD 'outdoor/indoor' public space. The design of the pavilion [which was not built] was a collaboration between Brisbane City Council, State Government, Office of Mayors, QUT, and Woods Bagot; and represented the intellectual capacity of current best urban practice.
