Biography
Dr Naomi Blacklock is a Lecturer at QUT, where she delivers interdisciplinary learning in creative practice through large foundational and specialised units across the School of Creative Practice. Her interests include gender studies, creative practice-led research and socially engaged creative practice. She completed her PhD, an exploration of intersectional feminism and the figure of the witch through public sound performance and installation art with the support of an Australian Postgraduate Award for Research in 2019. Her practice as a visual artist maps the nexus of embodied performance, cultural heritage and gender identity. Working across a range of media, from experimental sound and video installation to performance and sculpture, her work creatively examines the mythologies, archetypes and harmful histories of gender and cultural identity through an intersectional feminist lens. Her ritualised sound objects and performances are intended to amplify the body and the voice through performative bodily precision and screaming. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally in galleries and artist-run initiatives, including the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Tasmania’s Art Festival Dark Mofo, and Artspace Sydney. With a deep passion for fostering the growth of emerging creatives, Naomi actively champions professional opportunities for them. She serves on the board of Metro Arts in Brisbane, and is a founding Co-Director of CLUTCH Collective, a Brisbane-based Artist-Run Initiative (ARI) that delivered exhibitions from the back of a 3-tonne truck and is former Co-Director of Boxcopy ARI.
