Associate Professor
David Nielsen
Faculty of Engineering,
School of Architecture & Built Environment
Biography
David currently teaches into the architecture course with units focusing on integrated design and documentation, together with Building Information Modelling (BIM). His current research reinterprets the formative histories of the modern movement as it intersects within the German context. The general themes of his work include Expressionism and the Deutsche Werkbund, together with key personalities like Bruno Taut, Adolf Behne and Herman Muthesius. To accomplish this reinterpretation, he uses the perspectives offered by German industrialisation and exhibition architecture of the 18 and 19th centuries, while similarly including the diverse influences of Gothic architecture, the Victoria regia lily, Luxfer prisms, botanical glasshouses and Orientalism. His books include Bruno Taut’s design inspiration for the Glashaus (Routledge 2016); and his most recent interdisciplinary monograph, History of the Mauser rifle in Chile: Chileno Modelo 1895, 1912 and 1935 (Schiffer 2019) that dealt with German weapons sales and industrialisation in Chile. He is currently working on a various research projects that explore German Orientalism and how that intersected with architecture, together with a history of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.Personal details
