Biography
Dr Stacey Campbell is a senior lecturer and researcher in early childhood education. She specialises in language, literacy, English and teaching professional practice. Stacey is the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) course coordinator. Stacey’s academic teaching focuses on early childhood education, literacy, English and language, and reading and writing difficulties. She is particularly interested in the complex role of phonics, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and oral language in early reading and writing development. Stacey also has a research focus on parent-teacher partnerships.Stacey is a fully registered Queensland primary teacher (QCT) and has an ACECQA recognised birth-to-eight early childhood education degree. Stacey has worked as an early childhood teacher for over ten years in New South Wales as a director of community-based kindergartens and long day care services with children aged birth to five and a primary teacher in the early years of school (P-2). In addition to Stacey’s Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood 0-8) and Bachelor of Education (Primary) teaching qualifications, she has a Master of Arts degree in children’s literature, a PhD in Early Childhood Research, and a Graduate Certificate in Academic Teaching. She has recently completed a Graduate Certificate (Business) majoring in leadership through QUT’s Faculty of Business and Law.
Stacey’s research applies mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying early childhood education. She has increased visibility and recognition nationally and internationally for her early childhood literacy development work. Her scholarly outputs include peer-reviewed articles with 100% published in Q1 and Q2 ranked journals and teacher practitioner-focused journals. She has received awards for teaching excellence and industry service.
Stacey has held high-profile roles on the Editorial Board for Literacy Research: Theory, Methods, and Practice and the Editorial Review Board for The Reading Teacher. She was the co-editor of Practical Literacy: The Early and Primary Years for over four years. Her professional memberships include the Society for the Scientific Studies of Reading (SSSR), the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA), the UK Literacy Association (UKLA), the International Literacy Association (ILA) and Early Childhood Australia. Stacey has attracted internal research and commercial research funding. She has developed a range of research-informed online teacher professional resources for the Australian State and Federal Government, including the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and presented workshops for Early Childhood Australia. She also developed the highly successful Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Teaching Phonics in Early Childhood aligned to APST and NQS Standards with over 80,000 teachers and parent participants. Stacey has established national engagement partnerships, has won numerous awards for her teaching, and presented her research internationally and nationally, including invited conference keynote presentations.

Teaching
Stacey is the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) Course Coordinator. She teaches and coordinates undergraduate and postgraduate early years literacy, language and English, and the inclusive education reading and writing difficulties units. Stacey also teaches in the early childhood and primary teaching professional experience units.
Experience
Stacey has been a teacher and director in NSW primary schools and early childhood prior-to-school settings (kindergarten) for over 10 years. Stacey was an associate lecturer at Macquarie University, NSW where she taught early years English, literacy and language units and professional experience. Stacey joined QUT as an academic staff member in 2015 and is currently a course coordinator, senior lecturer and researcher in early years literacy, language and literature. Stacey's experience includes early childhood literacy consultancies with the NSW Department of Education and the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). Stacey has developed early literacy support materials and professional topic video resources for the QCAA's website. She has recently worked on early literacy research projects for the Commonwealth of Australia. Stacey developed the successful Teaching Phonics in Early Childhood Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with QUT/Future Learn, with over 80,000 national and international participants. Stacey has held editorial roles as the Co-Editor of Practical Literacy: The Early and Primary Years (PLEPY) (2020-2023), an Editorial Board Member of Literacy Research: Theory, methods, and Practice and an Editorial Review Board Member for The Reading Teacher (ILA, USA). Stacey is a supervisor and associate supervisor of four MPhil, PhD and EdD students investigating early childhood, literacy, English and assessment in early primary English curriculum areas. Stacey has also collaborated on research projects with Australia's national and local government departments.
