Biography
Tom is a Lecturer in Creative Practice and the First Year Student Coordinator for the School of Creative Arts. He has a keen interest in interactive music, games and playful environments. His practice-based research explores how digital games can support real-time music creation experiences, uniting perspectives from computer music, game studies, sound art, ludomusicology and human-computer interaction.Tom has expertise in designing and evaluating gamified systems for accessible, user-driven music generation which he has published and presented internationally. His research interests extend to video game music, mobile music, audiovisual performance, gamified audience participation and immersive environments.
Tom maintains a diverse teaching portfolio reflecting his interdisciplinary interests. Since commencing as a sessional academic in 2018, he has delivered undergraduate and postgraduate units spanning topics of music creation and production, sound in film and games, interactive art, extended reality and creative careers. Joining QUT in 2023, Tom now contributes to the core units shared across the School of Creative Arts while working to advance specialist learning in non-linear music and extended reality.
Tom received a Ph.D. in Music (2021) from the University of Newcastle, Australia following his completion of a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in 2016. Outside of his academic work, Tom has composed and produced original music for non-linear media including educational mobile apps and web-based games.
