Biography
Tim is a commercial fashion designer who has integrated this experience into his academic career.Career
Tim began his career as an independent fashion designer in Australia. Tim initially studied in Florence, Italy and subsequently built a business over thirty years with retail outlets in Brisbane and Sydney, and a workroom in Shanghai, China, with twenty-five staff. Tim’s label won many awards during this time. Tim holds a Master of International Business (Hons), and a Master of Global Competition and Consumer Law. Tim’s PhD was a study of Chinese fashion designers and their business and aesthetic models. Tim has led fashion programs at three Australian Universities, with a focus on technology and the future of fashion. Tim is an expert witness in fashion in legal matters and an expert on several committees for Standards Australia as well as the International Standards Organization.
Research
Tim’s research methodologies are qualitative with a focus on primary data gathering in the field. His research interests include fashion in China, fashion consumption, garments and technology, wearable technology, policy and legal infrastructure in the fashion industry, principles of the circular economy and design aesthetics.
Tim has written extensively about fashion in China and is considered an expert in this field.
Teaching
Tim is the study area coordinator of the fashion program and teaches broadly in all aspects of the degree, moving between fashion workrooms to theory-heavy courses. Some of these courses include coordinating Fashion Studio Units (making), Fashion Media (consumption and surveillance culture), Product Development (design and global supply chain), and Wearable Technology, (the future of fashion). Tim has managed the recent introduction of mid-year entry to the fashion program which involved significant curriculum re-design.
Tim’s pedagogical approach is to integrate his rich front-line industry experience within the academic framework for a robust learning outcome that prepares students to integrate with the global fashion industry as change-makers in the fashion system and product stewards who will lead the fashion industry toward more sustainable practices.
Tim is currently the Academic Integrity Officer for the School of Design, and the Equity representative for the School of Design in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice. In his teaching, Tim brings the concepts of Equity and Integrity into his teaching practice.
