Biography
Professor Divera Twisk Doctor of Philosophy (Maastricht University, The Netherlands), Master experimental psychology (University of Groningen), Bsoc.sci(Hons) University of Keele, United Kingdom.Divera is a human factors psychologist, with a PhD on adolescent risk taking. She has over 30 years’ experience in road safety research and policy development.In the Netherlands and internationally, she has made significant contributions across a wide range of road safety issues, including:
- Cycling safety, she has led studies on the safety of electric bicycles, developed one of the world’s instrumented bicycles in cooperation with Delft University, initiated the International Cycling Safety Conference (ICSC), and guest edited the first special issue on cycling safety of Accident Analyses and Prevention.
- Young drivers, she has chaired the OECD work group on this topic and was responsible for the OECD report ‘Young drivers; the road to safety’.
- Safe system approaches, she contributed to the conceptual development and theoretical underpinning of Sustainable Safety.
- International research: she has directly contributed to the introduction in the Netherlands of design guidelines for the cycling Infrastructure, to a GDL type of licensing for young, novice car drivers (2toDrive), to the training of road safety professionals in the field, and to the National Research Agenda on Safe Cycling.

- INTERACTION a project funded by the European Union to study the impact of nomadic devices, distraction and safety
- UDRIVE project funded by the European Union using the Naturalistic Driving technique. I was responsible for drafting the Work package on Vulnerable road users.
- MeBeSafe project funded by the European Union to promote safe driving by means of sensor assisted feedback and nudging. SWOV contributes to all work packages.
- WEVER 5 – year research programme with the aim to ensure that within ten years all education programmes used in schools have been assessed on their effects.
- VIRTUAL funded by the European Union Horizon2020 program to develop and apply body models for virtual testing.
