There is something for everyone at Sustainability Week

QUT Sustainability Week aims to highlight sustainability across teaching, research and operational areas of the university and the wider community.

During the week, a festival celebrating all things sustainability will be held at each of our campuses. Events include markets, research highlights, student-led events, guest speakers, workshops and more.

The More-than-Human Maker Symposium 2023 'Yimbaya Maranoa: Creating Resonant Echoes from Country' is an immersive event at QUT that explores the intersection of art, culture, and environment in the Maranoa region. Led by distinguished researchers and creative practitioners, the symposium delves into audience experiences with art, creativity, and technology, and fosters connections with Indigenous knowledge keepers. Through video/audio works, the Remapping Mitchell Collective showcases its impactful projects. Keynote speaker Michelle Maloney, from the Australian Earth Laws Alliance, emphasises the importance of ecocentric projects and collaborations.

Red, Blue & Yellow is run by ceramicist and sculptor Paula de la Rua Cordoba. Paula is passionate about nature and plants, working with porcelain and wood to create intricate, large botanical scale sculptures and art installations. Paula is a PhD Candidate at QUT.

Chev Lane

A fashion, culture and retail store that features a mix of conceptual, experimental, and upcycled pieces made by local designers and artists.

LUSH cosmetics

LUSH is a cosmetics company that lives up to its name as being advocates for ethical buying, fresh cosmetics, naked products, fighting animal testing, 100% vegetarian and handmade with love in New South Wales.

OZ Harvest

Watch zero-waste masters in action in a live cooking demo inspiring all of us to create delicious food with no food waste. The Ozharvest chef has a range of recipes, plus tips and tricks to revolutionise your home-cooking. You’ll also learn what OzHarvest does and the impact they make in communities across Australia.

Mallow Sustainability

Join Mallow Sustainability to find out more about composting and why it is so important to help us to fight food waste and improve our soils. Mallow can provide advice on what can go into QUT’s organics bins.

Brisbane City Council

Brisbane City Council are on board their litter prevention van - World Clean-up Day is 16 September, learn more about how you can prevent litter and help to clean it up in your local area and in public places.

The Environment Collective

The QUT Guild Environment Collective will be holding their food stall and giving away native seeds. Have a chat to them about how to get involved in sustainability on campus.

Australian Urban Growers

Australian Urban Growers is Brisbane's own vertical farming start-up. Centred around first educating and then building the sector; have a chat to them about growing cooler futures together.

Health, Safety and the Environment

Health and wellbeing is one of QUT's sustainability goals, and is fundamental to productive work and study at QUT. DHSE will be promoting the health and wellbeing resources and initiatives available at QUT.

Orange Sky Laundry

Orange Sky will be join us to:

  • Do your laundry – if you are a student and need some washing done, drop in and get it washed while you find out more about what Orange Sky do.
  • Sign up to be a volunteer for an Orange Sky Shift.
  • Look at how QUT engineering students are working on sustainability with orange sky laundry vans
  • Find out how you can donate to Orange Sky.

Come and see the Orange Sky Laundry Van and the sustainability elements that the Faculty of Engineering students have been working on.

Check out the furniture prototypes by the School of Architecture and Built Environment furniture design students who partnered with QUT Estate Planning to design a public furniture piece for ‘The Yard’ precinct, GP campus. Their full-size prototypes will be on display.

Join our resident birding team from the TERN (Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network) citizen science project for a 2-hour bird identification walk, followed by a brief presentation about the TERN project and then a shared morning tea on the deck at the wonderful Samford Ecological Research Facility – if you haven’t been there yet, this is a great opportunity to visit one of QUT’s best natural sites.

You can also take photos for the university bioquest if you are in a QUT team.

Dr Rebecca Huntley is one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends and a Fellow of the Research Society of Australia. She holds degrees in law and film studies and a PhD in gender studies. She has lead research at Essential Media and Vox Populi and was a director at Ipsos Australia. For a number of years, she ran her own research and consultancy firm working closely with climate and environment NGOs, government and business on climate change strategy and communication. She is now Director of Research at the agency 89DegreesEast.

Rebecca is the author of numerous books including How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way that Makes a Difference (Murdoch books, 2020), was a broadcaster with the ABC’s RN and presented The History Listen and Drive on a Friday. She writes regularly for The Monthly and Australian Traveller Magazine and has written op eds for The Guardian and The SMH.

MC for the session is Professor Kerrie Wilson Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Research Integrity).

Grab a bite, bring a blanket, and get comfy at QUT’s outdoor amphitheatre and get ready to be inspired by our wonderful speakers and watch some short films that educate, motivate, and provide hope. No bookings necessary.
