QUT Sustainability Week aims to highlight sustainability across teaching, research and operational areas of the university and the wider community.

During the week, a festival celebrating all things sustainability will be held at each of our campuses. Events include markets, research highlights, student-led events, guest speakers, workshops and more.

The More-than-Human Maker Symposium 2023 'Yimbaya Maranoa: Creating Resonant Echoes from Country' is an immersive event at QUT that explores the intersection of art, culture, and environment in the Maranoa region. Led by distinguished researchers and creative practitioners, the symposium delves into audience experiences with art, creativity, and technology, and fosters connections with Indigenous knowledge keepers. Through video/audio works, the Remapping Mitchell Collective showcases its impactful projects. Keynote speaker Michelle Maloney, from the Australian Earth Laws Alliance, emphasises the importance of ecocentric projects and collaborations.

Brisbane City Council are on board their litter prevention van - World Clean-up Day is 16 September, learn more about how you can prevent litter and help to clean it up in your local area and in public places.

Dr Rebecca Huntley is one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends and a Fellow of the Research Society of Australia. She holds degrees in law and film studies and a PhD in gender studies. She has lead research at Essential Media and Vox Populi and was a director at Ipsos Australia. For a number of years, she ran her own research and consultancy firm working closely with climate and environment NGOs, government and business on climate change strategy and communication. She is now Director of Research at the agency 89DegreesEast.

Rebecca is the author of numerous books including How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way that Makes a Difference (Murdoch books, 2020), was a broadcaster with the ABC’s RN and presented The History Listen and Drive on a Friday. She writes regularly for The Monthly and Australian Traveller Magazine and has written op eds for The Guardian and The SMH.

MC for the session is Professor Kerrie Wilson Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Research Integrity).

"Addressing Harmonics Issues of Grids with High Penetration of Grid-Connected Power Converters: calibration and measurement."

Our first speaker Professor Firuz Zare will talk about how penetration of grid-connected renewable energy systems and smart loads based on high-frequency power electronics converters (such as solar inverters, wind turbines and variable speed motor drive systems) has been increasing in low and medium-voltage power networks.

Dr Ilya Budovsky, our second speaker, will discuss how Rapid growth of sustainable sources of energy and energy-efficient appliances necessitates reliable measurement of increasingly complex voltage and current waveforms in medium and high-voltage electrical networks.

This workshop will bring together academics, researchers and practitioners to share their experiences, expertise and visions for::

  • evolving participatory design approaches to move beyond the individual
  • reinvigorating a stronger relationship between communities and institutions across different scales in order to re-politicise participatory design practices, projects and methods
  • making a concerted effort of contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We are specifically interested in ways of ‘designing smart’ by engaging and working with communities to address complex challenges, such as social inequality, economic disparity and environmental degradation to build more sustainable, resilient and socially ‘just’ communities.

The workshop will be run in conjunction with QUT Sustainability Week as well as the Brisbane, Australia PDC Places event as a full day face-to-face workshop.

Sustainable University Campus of the Future – Impact Lab 3 | Planet (9am-11am)

This student showcase was completed in 2021 by Impact Lab 3 students. The design proposals are based on a sustainable future (2050) for QUT. The students completed stakeholder mapping, applied the Sustainable Development Goals, analysed the systems influencing identified sustainability problems and evaluated the dominant narratives that shape the world we live in to develop their designs.

SCIP – screens blurb (11am-1pm)

The Student Catchment Immersion Program (SCIP) is a co-curricular activity that provides the opportunity for QUT Engineering and Science students to learn about the local environment and the role of Brisbane City Council and the Creek Catchment groups.

Semester one students shared one of the greatest gifts from our Indigenous Australian people, Dadirri, which is described as inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. The contemplative way of Dadirri taught students to be still in our local native Brisbane creek catchment reserves. The showcase features student photos and their Dadirri.

Sustainable Engineering Research (1pm-3pm)

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering Sustainable research, profiling some of the incredible work undertaken by our world-acclaimed researchers. Queensland filmmaker and biologist, Dr. Chadden Hunter has spent the last 20 years working alongside Sir David Attenborough directing the world’s most famous nature films. Join him for a fascinating multimedia journey through the secrets of wildlife filmmaking during QUT’s Sustainability Week 2022. Along the way he’ll share never before seen footage and ask thought-provoking questions about whether glossy nature shows actually do anything for global sustainability.
