As a Singapore Cultural Ambassador and Founder, CEO and Artistic Director of Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd, Danny has honed his creative practice and delivered arts excellence on an international stage.

The QUT Alumni Team sat down with Danny to discuss how the Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd and other Asian contemporary dance companies have helped shape the formation and reflection of Asian identity in Singapore and beyond, the emerging trends in dance and what continues to drive his need to innovate.

You founded Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd in 1999, what did it look like then? And how has the dance company evolved over the years?

When I founded Odyssey Dance Theatre, it was just a dance company. Over two decades, the company evolved into a prolific and enterprising arts organisation and non-profit charity with Institute of Public Character status and Associate Membership of the Singapore National Council of Social Services. Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd (ODT Ltd) is now recognised as an esteemed arts and cultural organisation in Singapore, with a distinctive portfolio of six divisions namely - ODT Dance, ODT International, ODT Education, ODT Cares, ODT Arts Hub and ODT Gives, accompanied by a range of strategic services.

How has Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd and other Asian contemporary dance companies helped shape the formation and reflection of Asian identification in Singapore?

Over the years, under ODT International, we have produced numerous festivals and international productions that showcase the diversity and richness of Asian identity, history, and culture. All these productions have drawn inspirations from various Asian dance forms, music, costumes, and rituals; and integrating these elements with contemporary movements and styles to create unique and mesmerising performances.

Through our long-term efforts in celebrating Cultural Diplomacy with the world, we have challenged stereotypes and misconceptions on Asian identity and culture, and promoted understanding, appreciation, and respect for different cultures and identities. We have also collaborated with other Asian contemporary dance companies to create a more cohesive and connected community of artists and performers, who share a common vision and mission to promote and celebrate Asian culture and identity.

Overall, Odyssey Dance Theatre Ltd and its dance companies have been instrumental in shaping the formation and reflection of Asian identification in Singapore and beyond. We remain deeply committed to promoting and celebrating Asian culture and identity through dance, and to creating a more connected, inclusive, and vibrant community globally.

The increasing use of technology in dance performances and productions – this can include the use of virtual and augmented reality, interactive projections and lighting, and other cutting-edge technologies that enhance the audience’s experience and create new and exciting possibilities for performance and storytelling.

The growing focus on social and environmental issues in dance – as artists and performers seek to use their platform to raise awareness and inspire action on global issues.

Greater collaboration and cross-disciplinary work – as dance companies seek to connect with artists and performers from other fields, such as music, theatre, and visual arts.

Lastly, we see a trend towards greater diversity and inclusivity in dance as artists and performers seek to promote presentations and to celebrate the richness and diversity of different cultures, identities, and experiences. This can include works that incorporate traditional dances and music from different cultures, as well as works that explore issues related to freedom, gender, race, and sexuality.

You’ve forged strong alliances with many global organisations and artists What advice do you give aspiring contemporary dancers as they establish professional connections for themselves?

My advice would be to focus on building authentic and meaningful relationships with those in the industry - dancers, choreographers, producers, and other professionals.

Attending events, festivals, and conferences, participating in workshops and masterclasses, and engaging on social media and other platforms can all be effective ways to build your network and establish professional connections.

It's also important to remember that building relationships takes time and effort. Be patient, persistent and genuine in your interactions with others, and seek out opportunities to collaborate and learn from those who inspire you.

I would also encourage aspiring dancers to focus on developing their skills, honing their craft, and staying true to their artistic voice. Being authentic and true to yourself can be a powerful asset in building lasting and meaningful connections in the dance world.

How do you find inspiration for your work to ensure that you’re continually coming up with new ideas?

I find inspiration from a wide range of sources, including the creativity and passion of our team members, the experiences and stories of the communities we serve, and the works of other artistic directors and thought leaders in the field.

It is the appreciation and recognition of life phases that make me remain grounded, humble, and true to my cause. Even now at the age of 50, I feel extremely motivated. I am still constantly seeking out new ideas and perspectives by staying up to date with the latest trends, attending conferences and festivals, and engaging with other professionals. I also draw inspiration from the arts in other forms, such as music, theatre, and visual arts, as well as from the natural world and the everyday experiences of life.

Overall, finding inspiration for my work is an ongoing process that requires a willingness to learn, an open mind, and a deep commitment to excellence and innovation. By staying curious, engaged, and committed, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the arts and culture sector and create meaningful experiences that inspire and transform the lives of individuals and communities around the world.

What is one skill you couldn’t live without and why?

Creativity! Being able to approach challenges and opportunities with an open mind is essential in the arts and culture sector, where innovation and originality are highly valued. Whether it is developing new artistic concepts, creating engaging and impactful educational programmes, or forging new partnerships and collaborations, the ability to think creatively and come up with unique and innovative ideas is essential to success.

Moreover, being able to think outside the box is not just essential in the arts and culture sector, but also in all aspects of life. Whether it's solving a complex problem at work, developing a new business strategy, or finding new ways to connect with others, the ability to think creatively can help us to overcome the unknown and achieve our goals in new and exciting ways. Be creative, don’t be afraid of failures!
