Queensland is known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity but we face a critical point in history for enacting long-term environmental sustainability. We must seize the opportunity to make important changes today, to ensure a bright, equitable and sustainable future for all.

As the Director of Climate Positive Brisbane 2032 and Climate Futures within the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, I am fortunate to apply my passion for sustainability to deliver policies and programs for Queensland. I am particularly excited by the potential for our collective activities to not only cause no further ecological damage, but to actively contribute to a healthier, regenerated and more thriving planet. This will require us to work together to establish collective images of a preferred future, something I am deeply passionate about as a researcher and author in the field of regenerative futures.

We know that our journey towards sustainability must be a collective effort that inspires commitment, collaboration and innovation.

The recently released Queensland 30 Year Plan was an important initiative by the Queensland Government to spark these types of conversations, across generation and with people of diverse backgrounds. First Nations Climate Action groups formed a crucial aspect of this work which recognised the importance of Indigenous knowledge and wisdom in crafting a sustainable and climate resilient future.  This future-focused approach was also central to the recently released Elevate 2042, the Legacy Strategy for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With a bold vision, and transformative intent, this strategy provides an opportunity for all Queenslanders to benefit from the catalytic opportunities that hosting the Games presents.

I am fortunate to be delivering cross sectoral responses to drive long-term sustainability change. These include working to address some of the ambitious sustainability commitments made for the Games like decarbonising our State’s supply chains and improving the climate resilience of our region. We know that our journey towards sustainability must be a collective effort that inspires commitment, collaboration and innovation. By fostering an inclusive and holistic approach, we can pave the way for a vibrant, thriving Queensland—one that harmoniously coexists with nature.

In Queensland, we're not just envisioning a sustainable future; we're actively creating it. Together, we'll pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable and resilient future for everyone.
