Empowering Rural Healthcare: The Ron Macnamara Scholarship
Kim studied the Master of Nurse Practitioner, with the aim of improving access to the delivery of holistic patient-centred chronic disease care in remote communities.
I studied the Master of Nurse Practitioner, which is delivered online. Despite being based remotely, the interactions I had in the online lectures developed a sense of community and made studying not so isolating.
Working full time as a nurse practitioner candidate, I found the course content was easy to follow and relevant to practice. For example, like many people I found presenting case studies nerve wracking, but the feedback I was given helped me to present case studies to specialists in multidisciplinary case conferences.
About the scholarship
I was awarded the Ron Macnamara Rural Nursing Scholarship, which was the first and only scholarship I applied for. I recognised it as an opportunity to expand my current and future study plans. The scholarship has been instrumental in supporting my Master of Nurse Practitioner studies, providing access to additional learning materials and educational opportunities.
During my studies, I have had the privilege of working in the remote communities of Western Cape York. This experience has allowed me to collaborate with incredible clients and dedicated healthcare staff, from whom I have gained invaluable insights and knowledge. The scholarship has played a crucial role in enhancing my clinical practice and commitment to providing quality care in rural healthcare settings. I have also enrolled in further studies which the scholarship has supported, as it will for other study plans I have for the future.
As part of my studies, I was introduced to a rural nurse mentor. My mentor is a passionate and knowledgeable nurse practitioner who has been working in the same remote region for the past five years. They shared so much invaluable clinical knowledge, and lessons learnt on delivering holistic and culturally appropriate care.
If you are considering this scholarship, don’t be afraid to apply. If you want to deliver care in remote communities and grow in your field, this scholarship will support you, bringing much needed knowledge and delivery of quality care to remote communities.
