In today’s complex world, marked by heightened awareness of environmental and social issues, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 17 – Partnerships and Goals – is both a daunting challenge and an unparalleled opportunity. It serves as a linchpin for the success of the other sixteen goals, embodying the collective effort needed to forge a sustainable future for generations to come. This isn’t just a goal; it’s a mission and why SEVENTEENx exists.

Since emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the urgency to translate heightened awareness into tangible action has never been greater. Sir David Attenborough's words reminding us that our collective strength far surpasses the sum of our efforts has echoed in my mind. This sentiment is reverberated in discussions between thought leaders like Brene Brown and Simon Sinek, who explore the difference between finite and infinite approaches to problem-solving.

For too long, businesses have operated within a finite mindset, focused solely on shareholder returns and short-term gains. But the world is changing, and so is our approach to business. We must recognise the infinite opportunities beyond the bottom line, embracing a collaborative mindset that transcends traditional boundaries.

Here are five reasons why partnerships hold the key to unlocking a sustainable future:

Government Business Collaboration: As Bill Gates highlighted, addressing monumental challenges like climate change requires a joint effort between government and businesses. It’s time to move past outdated notions of public versus private sector interests and embrace a new era of collaboration. The investment required may be substantial, but the cost of inaction far outweighs the price of collaboration.

From Competition to Collaboration: In social enterprise, collaboration reigns supreme. Brands with competing interests come together, driven by a shared purpose to effect positive changes. SEVENTEENx exemplifies this ethos, demonstrating how partnerships can drive meaningful impact beyond individual interests.

The Power of Social Facilitation: We collaborate and inspire one another to reach new heights. Social facilitation theory underscores the phenomenon wherein our performance improves in the presence of others. By surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals and organisations, we elevate our collective potential to drive change.

Knowledge Sharing as a Catalyst for Innovation: No one entity holds all the answers, but together, we process a wealth of collective knowledge. Partnerships facilitate the exchange of ideas, insights, and innovations, fuelling progress towards shared goals. In a world rife with complex challenges, collaboration is not just beneficial; it’s essential.

Fostering a Societal Approach: The shift from “I” to “We” is palpable in the social enterprise space. Businesses increasingly recognise their responsibility to society and the planet; by reframing their objectives, businesses can amplify their impact and drive positive change on a global scale.

Ultimately, Sustainable Development Goal 17 isn’t just about forging partnerships; it’s about harnessing collective power of humanity to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time. It’s about recognising that by working together, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.

As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, let us embrace the spirit of collaboration and partnership. Let us reach out, connect and ask ourselves: What can we achieve together for the greater good? In doing so, we don’t only advance the SDG’s but pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

The SEVENTEENx Story

We believe every business can create great success alongside great impact and purpose. we agree that the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are a great guide to making this possible.

And along came the idea. What if we gathered amazing entrepreneurs, business owners, corporate leaders, and start-ups who are building their brands around the SDGs? We'd grab them and put them on stage to inspire the business community to see how it can be done.

We’ll give them 17 minutes each to tell their story and relate it to the 17 goals (some or all), and we’ll call it SEVENTEENx.

We exist to connect the business community with the Global Goals through 3 pillars central to our purpose.

  1. Educate
  2. Engage
  3. Enable

The business community should contribute to the #2030 Agenda through their business.

As business leaders and communities, it is paramount that we look to use our businesses as a force for good and a vehicle for change. It is possible to succeed in business and positively impact the world, society, people, and planet.
