Abbi has always been creative. But when it came time to choose her degree, she wanted the balance of being able to pursue her passion, but make sure there would be tangible career outcomes at the other end.

After considering countless options across different universities, she chose to study a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Communication. Now 3 years in, Abbi discusses what studying has been like and where she hopes she'll go.

Spoilt for choice

As I grew up in Emerald (rural Queensland) before I moved to Brisbane for university, I didn’t really understand what the different courses were going to be like. I considered plenty of options, such as psychology, engineering, and business/law, before finally finding a course that I adored. But I always had a passion for communication, and find myself fascinated by the newest and latest trends in media.

Following my passion, with countless career options

I found that my degree (Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Communication) allows me to utilise my creative side, while helping me to develop as a professional. I feel that it’s so important to try and integrate your passions into everyday activities, and my degree choice allows me to do just that. My double degree also allows me to have the autonomy to switch across certain industry and have a multitude of skills.

I chose QUT because my course had a very practical learning style. Not only this, but my degree also offers options to do Work Integrated Learning, which allowed students like myself to get experience in the industry while completing our degree.

New friends and industry connections

Honestly, I’ve enjoyed the benefits of joining and actively being a part of one of my faculty clubs, AMPed. I joined AMPed as their Student & Communities Director and have just been elected to the role of President.

I joined to meet my peers and make friends, but I got so much more out of it. I’ve been able to meet industry guests, do so incredible internships, develop strong interpersonal and communication skills, and push myself to be a better individual in and out of the classroom.

A little help along the way

I am the recipient of one of QUT’s Equity Scholarships! As a full-time rural student, these scholarships have made the world of difference to me. I've been able to continue my studies, undertake internships, be a part of a student club and afford to live in Brisbane. I cannot stress enough that future students should see QUT’s scholarship website and take note of any upcoming deadlines if they want to apply!

My advice to future students

You'll see lots of course options, and infinite career possibilities. But when it comes time, you should honestly just choose what you're passionate about. There are always ways to help improve your career prospects - like double degree options and work experience opportunities.

If you're a fan of communications, you can explore your passion while maximising your career options with a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Communication.
