Hear international media and communication and business student Panda Hui reflect on her experience at Australia’s top-ranked School of Communication.
QUT’s Communication Faculty Bachelor of Communication degree allows students to enrol in any of its five study areas: Digital Media, Media and Entertainment Industries, Journalism, Professional Communication, and Advertising and Public Relations.
Additionally, students in select study areas can pursue double degrees in business, information technology, justice, law, science, nutrition science, and public health, allowing them greater career flexibility and additional post-graduation options.
The School of Communication hosts more than 5,000 students. Of these, more than 10% are international students and 63% are women. QUT’s School of Communication is recognised as the country’s best and the 15th best worldwide.
Beyond these statistics, though, what’s it like to be a student in our School?
What attracted you to QUT/The School of Communication?
At first, I chose to study in the School of Communication at QUT as it has an outstanding reputation in the field and is well known by industry. Furthermore, I have always been interested in exploring multifaceted human interaction, and communication studies provide a window for me to have a glimpse of that.
What skills or experiences learnt here will you take with you beyond the university?
In the study of communication, instead of gaining specific skills, I believe the learning experience has shaped my way of thinking, that allows me to perceive the world with multiple perspectives that are beyond the frameworks of teaching materials.
What advice do you have for students who want to study here?
Learn, unlearn, relearn. repeat.
What’s something you’ve learnt here that would be difficult to learn on your own or elsewhere?
I started to study media and communications in Brisbane at the right time when it began to develop and grow into something bigger. A degree like that comes in really handy in observing how a city is unfolding, and QUT provided a learning environment that nurtured my perspectives and critical thinking.
What was your motivation in selecting a double-degree program, and what has been your experience so far with it?
My motivation for selecting these specific areas of study (International Business and Media and Communication) was because I was interested in international media companies like BuzzFeed and Alphabet and thought that this combination would help me to gain insight in the relevant fields.
So far, my experience is that it seems to allow me to have a broader perspective compared to people my age and to understand the world through different people’s eyes.
My degrees really broadened my perspective in understanding the world with different filters. They helped me not just to grow and learn as a student, but also consolidate me as a person, my beliefs and passion. I would say my degrees provided a lot more than just a certificate, but really shaped who I am as an individual.
