After high school, I decided to take a year off before I started studying a Bachelor of Engineering here at QUT. However, I soon understood that it wasn't exactly what I was looking for as I felt the need for a degree with a stronger creative focus.

Discovering creative arts

Upon my realisation, I decided to take some additional time off to focus on work. While browsing online, I came across an advertisement for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) at QUT, and felt an immediate attraction to it. Since enrolling in my degree, I’ve loved every moment of it. In this course, I've been able to connect with all of my true interests and values, unlike in other courses.

Finding passion at university

I had a lot more freedom to explore different aspects of the fine arts when I returned to study for this degree. It wasn't quite the right time for me when I first started at uni. At that point in my life, I didn’t have enough experience to really tap in and utilise my creative side. Now, with both tertiary education and working experience, studying visual arts seems so natural.

I've actually still been able to draw upon my initial interest in engineering in my current course. In my graduate work project, I've worked with some engineering techs from the university to come up with something that captures my real interests.

Returning to study has provided me with the opportunity to discover where my real interests lie and to bring in all my interests rather than just one. The energy and support of the QUT community really made me appreciate every moment of my creative journey, and I've loved every second of it.
