I studied abroad for a semester at Aarhus University in Denmark. Aarhus is a wonderful little city and I can’t recommend it enough!
While on exchange, I used two general electives to study Danish Perspectives and Culture and Politics, and also undertook Aarhus University’s equivalent subject to Persuasive Writing. Aarhus University offers a really broad range of subjects, so I got the chance to study subjects I wouldn’t even get to at QUT.
As an exchange student in Aarhus, there are plenty of ways you can meet people and make friends. Around 12% of Aarhus University’s student body is made up of international students, representing over 106 nationalities. The University hosts weekly International Student Nights at their Student House, which are tons of fun. You’ll also get set up with a Danish buddy, who will get in touch with you before you arrive in Aarhus and show you around the University during orientation. Your buddy will be a buddy to a few other students too, so you’ll have a buddy group set up before you even arrive.
Outside of university life, Aarhus is a great place to live. The city is filled with life, from quaint little coffee shops to museums, parks and nightclubs. Denmark is also a super safe country, and everyone in Aarhus speaks English just as well as native English speakers do. There’s even the option to learn some Danish through classes taught at Aarhus University, which is a great way to meet international students and learn some new skills.
Although Denmark is quite a cold country, it’s also known as one of the world’s happiest. To combat the tough weather the Danes have embraced the concept of ‘hygge’— a Danish phenomenon that loosely translates to cosiness. In winter, Danes love to get hygge any way they can— lighting candles and fires, snuggling up with blankets, drinking warm drinks and spending quality time with your loved ones. It’s a great way to enjoy winter, and hygge is considered one of the main reasons why Denmark is one of the world’s happiest countries!
If you’re considering going on exchange, definitely do it. I had an incredible time in Denmark, and I know anyone who attends Aarhus University will love it as much as I did.
