Savita Sandhu is a business owner who helps clients improve their lives.
I’m passionate about supporting people to better health through nutrition. As a dietitian running my own clinic, Savvy Dietetics, I provide tailored nutrition support to clients seeking ease and clarity on their health journey. I primarily support burnt out millennials, and women reckoning with menopause.
Growing up I loved all aspects of cooking and gardening, however personal challenges with food intolerances inspired me to learn more about how food impacts the body and how it can be used to manage health conditions.
As a dietitian, I provide tailored nutrition support. The clients that come to see me often have complex health situations and can feel confused and disheartened. I unpack their unique health concerns and circumstances and create client-led strategies. Hearing my clients’ success stories and witnessing how the strategies we created together have reduced their health issues is wonderfully rewarding.
The hands-on, practical aspects of the nutrition and dietetics degree were a highlight of my studies, from the biochemistry labs to conducting experiments in the food kitchen, excursions and placement. In these experiences I could apply what we had learnt from readings and lectures.
Placements helped me refine all aspects of my communication and taught me how to truly listen to my patients, build trust, and facilitate dietary change from a place of empowerment. I valued the support from QUT academics and supervisors on placement. We had regular debriefing sessions and I learnt how to reflect on my practice.
Both the regular academics and guest lecturers at QUT were passionate and highly skilled in their respective areas. As a result, they brought real-world examples into the classroom which made learning the content much more engaging. They were all great teachers and created a safe environment where we could have open discussions.
Dietetics is a small world – I made some of my closest friends at university, and now have a strong support network of peers and academics in the nutrition, research and public health spaces. We regularly share what we are working on in our careers and discuss hurdles and wins together. This is an incredible opportunity to learn about the newest developments in the field, hone critical thinking skills and foster a supportive environment.
Savvy Dietetics is located at 2/14 Denham Terrace, Tarragindi.
