Dietetics student, Harsha, shares her thoughts on switching careers and why it’s okay to change your mind to follow your interests.

Why did you choose to study nutrition and dietetics?

I always knew I would work in healthcare, however I struggled to decide on which area I wanted to focus on. I have a degree in pharmacy from another university but didn’t feel fulfilled by the thought of my future as a pharmacist. In 2020, I found a passion to study dietetics to help people with their food choices and nutrition. I’ve struggled with issues related to food and self-esteem, so I feel inspired to help people facing similar challenges.

Are there any specific aspects of this course that you’ve enjoyed?

I enjoy learning about food chemistry and technology because we work in food laboratories and learn about the science behind foods that I wouldn’t normally consider. It has reignited my love of food and cooking.

I also really enjoy meeting some amazing course coordinators, lecturers and tutors. So many teaching staff have made me want to come to class and learn. They always create such a safe space and allow me to feel comfortable asking questions.

Why did you choose to study at QUT?

During my pharmacy degree, I compared my experiences to pharmacy students at QUT and realised that they were getting far more exposure to industry, and much more help finding career opportunities than I was. I’m passionate about progressing in my chosen profession and QUT provides me with the best opportunity to follow my ambitions.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying at QUT?

I’d say to consider what they want from life, how they want to live their lives and what their values are. I studied pharmacy at another university because it would make my family happy, provide me with good income and plenty of career opportunities. I realised very late into my degree that it wasn’t what I wanted. What I wish I knew when I finished school is that it’s okay to pursue a degree in something that makes you happy. QUT has provided me with an opportunity to do that, and it could for you, too.
