There’s a new medical program in Queensland, planning to start in 2027 (subject to accreditation).
Here’s what we know so far.
QUT is planning to offer its new medical program starting in 2027. It’s not ready yet, and the course still has to go through an accreditation process to get approval before any places can be offered.
BUT…
Once it’s ready this course will be a five-year medical program designed to prepare future doctors to make a real difference.
It will focus on practical training, emphasise community care, and will offer a pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and students from regional, rural and remote areas.

When will QUT’s new medical program be available for study?
Semester 1, 2027 will be the first intake for the Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medicine (so long as the course receives accreditation).
The Government has announced that QUT will be able to offer 240 Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) over five years. That’s 48 places per year.
A CSP is a place at a university where the Government pays part of your fees. This subsidy is not a loan, so you don’t have to pay it back. It covers a large portion of your fees.
Who can apply to study medicine at QUT?
There will be two entry points for the medical program. You can apply straight out of high school to do the five-year program.
Or, if you have a recognised bachelor degree and professional registration in a recognised discipline, you can apply for graduate entry. This is direct entry in to the Doctor of Medicine program, which will take you three years to complete.
The first intake in Semester 1, 2027 will be for the five-year degree.
We’re also aiming to roll out our graduate entry pathway from Semester 1, 2027 (again, subject to accreditation).
Alternative entry pathways will be available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and for rural and remote students. More information about this pathway will be coming soon.
Do I have to sit the UCAT? (What is the UCAT?)
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is an admissions test. Universities in Australia and New Zealand use this test to select applicants for medical programs.
At this stage QUT’s medicine program will require students to sit the UCAT.
More information about this, and the full admissions process, will be available in 2026.
What will QUT’s Doctor of Medicine cost?
Information about fees will be available closer to 2027.
However, this five-year, streamlined program is designed to help reduce costs for students and remove some of the financial barriers to studying medicine.
Will I be able to work while I study?
The first two years of the undergraduate entry program will be available part time (over four years). We are also working with our clinical partners to develop a part-time offering for the final two years.
This will give flexibility to students who need to balance their studies with other responsibilities like work or caring.
What will be different about QUT’s medical program?
Like all of QUT’s courses, there will be a focus on practical experience. Students will start learning in clinical settings from Semester 1, Year 1, developing their medical skills right away.
It will be the most streamlined public pathway to a medical degree in Queensland, with a 5-year undergraduate entry pathway to medicine.
Flexible, part-time study options will allow students to contribute to the healthcare workforce while completing their studies.
The program will have a strong emphasis on primary care, which is care that happens in communities. The goal is to prepare future doctors to be socially aware, safe practitioners who will improve the health of people in urban, regional, rural and remote areas.
Will international students be able to apply?
QUT is still working through the final details, but some international places are likely to become available from 2028. More information will be available closer to that time.
