Tim Gillies shares why he chose to switch careers and join growing industry.
Why did you choose to study health information management?
I had a friend who was working within the same industry and she mentioned that it was a growing and in-demand field. For some reason it just appealed to me, and I never dismissed the idea of changing careers. One day I just decided to apply online, and the rest is history.
What made you choose QUT?
QUT are only one of two universities in Australia that provide a Health Information Management degree that is accredited by HIMAA.
What parts of the course have you enjoyed the most?
I have really enjoyed all the content that has been taught so far. There’s been a lot of guest lecturers that have shared their time (especially within health information management subjects) and spoken about how the subjects apply to their current role, which has given real insight into how the subject applies outside the classroom.
What have been the highlights of your student experience at QUT so far?
I think it’s the connections that I have made at QUT that I have most enjoyed. I have made some real friends with other students, especially within my HIM cohort. Also, the teaching staff within the degree have been amazing on so many levels. The whole experience of attending university and studying has been really enjoyable, I love my degree!
What kind of work placement experiences have you had as part of your degree?
I am actually on my first placement as I write this, completing a Clinical Coding with Queensland Health. Its assuring to know that what I’m learning is relevant and really exciting to put what I have learned into practice.
The staff at Nambour Hospital and Sunshine Coast University Hospital have been so supportive and helpful which is really encouraging also.
How are your experiences preparing you for a career in health information management?
There is such a great relationship between QUT and public and private health services in Queensland and all over Australia. Sue Walker and Maryann Wood are fantastic at promoting the degree within the industry and have numerous contacts from there long careers within the health information management field. We are exposed to potential job opportunities whilst studying as well, which is really encouraging. Its assuring to know that I will be in high demand.
Have you received any scholarships or bursaries?
Yes, I have. I applied for an equity scholarship at the beginning of the 2022 year and received $1500. This has helped me to be able to focus on my studies and helped reduce the financial burden around studying. Also, the process for applying was simple and easy.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying at QUT?
QUT is a such a great institution and they have been so helpful and supportive. What advice would I give to someone considering studying at QUT? Just do it! I have never regretted my choice, and I’m so grateful that I decided to take the plunge.
