This year QUT welcomed 10 universities from across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific to compete in the 17th annual Torts Moot competition.
Congratulations to all universities who competed in the fierce week-long tournament, contributing to a successful, enjoyable and collegiate mooting competition.
Bond University and the University of New South Wales battled it out in the grand final, with Bond University awarded first place.

The QUT Torts Moot is a prestigious international mooting competition hosted by QUT’s Faculty of Law. The Faculty is renowned for its excellent mooting program and success at national and international mooting competitions.

The problem involves a hypothetical torts law case in the Queensland Moot Court of Appeal. The students are required to engage with complex legal questions arising from a realistic factual background, which is designed to simulate a real case. Either the appellant or respondent may be successful on appeal.
This year, competitors argued a negligence problem concerning an alleged breach of duty by an employer and contributory negligence by the employee.
All teams competed in front of a bench of judges, many of whom are practicing justices who volunteered their time to support the Torts Moot.
The grand final was argued before a distinguished panel comprised of the Honourable Justice John Bond, his Honour Judge David Kent QC and Dan Rogers from Robertson O’Gorman.

The QUT Torts Moot is a unique event that provides an insight into the torts practice area. Mooting builds essential skills for legal practice and is particularly beneficial for those intending to go to the Bar. Participants develop their advocacy, court etiquette, research and legal writing skills.
