Five new QUT Faculty of Law Founders' Scholarship recipients were welcomed by fund sponsors and staff and at this year's annual presentation function.
Each year the QUT Faculty of Law celebrates and welcomes the new recipients, providing an opportunity for the students to meet with sponsors and past recipients. Due to restrictions on gatherings attendance was limited to 2020 recipients and committee members.
The QUT Faculty of Law Founders' Scholarship fund is unique and provides first-year law students experiencing hardship with financial, networking, and mentoring support. The aim of the fund is to help ensure that disadvantaged students receive support to achieve their full potential.
Professor Dan Hunter, Executive Dean of the QUT Faculty of Law and a personal sponsor of the scholarship fund, welcomed the guests to the event. He emphasised the importance of the scholarship, the integral role it plays in the QUT Faculty of Law and the great opportunities it provides to students before congratulating this year’s scholarship recipients.
At the morning tea, new scholarship recipients Lauren, Alexa, Gemma, Mustafa and Mikaela (via Zoom) had the opportunity to meet each other and network with members of the QUT Faculty of Law Founders’ Scholarship Fund Committee.
Earlier this year a new Law Founders' scholarship was created in honour of Professor Des Butler, who sadly passed away in 2019. Des was an influential and innovative academic in the QUT Law School whose dedication to his work and students has left a lasting legacy at QUT. The Des Butler Memorial Scholarship for 2020 has been awarded to Alexa Roder.
Luke Mountford, Chair of the QUT Faculty of Law Founders’ Scholarship Fund Committee and Partner at HopgoodGanim Lawyers, also addressed the guests.
“I am passionate about the fund and I believe these scholarships have a long-lasting positive impact, not only for the students, but for those who contribute to the fund and our legal profession,” he said.
“We currently have 33 student recipients studying at QUT, including five new recipients this year. It is pleasing to know of the success of past recipients, many who have graduated are now working in both government and private legal roles.”
Luke also thanked the scholarship’s current sponsors, including Gadens, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, DLA Piper Australia, Shine Lawyers, Interfinancial, Dan Brown and Theresa Handicott.
