Eight new QUT Faculty of Law Founders' Scholarship recipients were welcomed by sponsors, staff and guests at this year's presentation and morning tea.
Law Founders’ Scholarships are given to first-year law students experiencing financial hardship.
This year, the Faculty is proud to announce the award of two new scholarships: The InterFinancial Law Founders’ Scholarship and the Teresa Handicott Law Founders’ Scholarship. InterFinancial’s Managing Director, Sharon Doyle, is both a Law Faculty alumna and a member of the scholarship fund’s committee. Teresa is also a QUT law graduate and former Chair of the Law Founders’ Scholarship Fund Committee.
At the morning tea, new scholarship recipients Samantha Jessup, Mohammed Salih Mohammed, Hussen Kosanda, Ruth Finneran, Sophie Brooks, Irene Hartley, Maitland Bishopp and Isabella Gray had the opportunity to network with representatives from the sponsor firms and past recipients.
Luke Mountford, Chair of the QUT Faculty of Law Founders’ Scholarship Fund Committee and Partner at HopgoodGanim Lawyers, addressed the guests.
“We currently have 33 student recipients studying at QUT, including eight new recipients this year. To date, 32 students have graduated and are working in both government and private legal roles,” he said.
“I am passionate about the fund and the power of education, and believe our scholarships positively impact on our students and those who contribute to the fund.”
Luke also thanked this year’s firm sponsors, including Gadens, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, King & Wood Mallesons, DLA Piper Australia, Shine Lawyers, and Dan Brown.
Samuel Broadbent, a recipient of the Scholarship in 2017, shared his experience of the Scholarship and what it has meant to him.
"Whilst the financial side of the scholarship does certainly help alleviate some of the stressors faced by daily living, I have found that it is also the community of support which has enabled me to succeed in my university studies," he said.
"I’d like to thank each and every one of you who has donated your time, effort and money to the Law Founders’ Scholarship fund. Your support means a great deal."
We encourage you or your organisation to get involved with QUT by engaging with and supporting our current students through initiatives such as the QUT Faculty of Law Founders' Scholarship.
