QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil has been appointed by the Federal Government to lead an independent review of the Australian Research Council (ARC).
In announcing the review committee yesterday, Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said the review would remove political interference from the ARC’s operations.
Mr Clare said Professor Sheil would join the University of Adelaide’s Professor Mark Hutchinson and La Trobe University’s Professor Susan Dodds to conduct the first review of the ARC in 20 years.
Professor Sheil was CEO of the ARC for almost five years, from 2007 to 2012, and said she was looking forward to using her extensive knowledge of the sector to conduct the review.
“Australia has some of the world’s best researchers, and it’s important the ARC can support universities and their staff to do the research that will help solve the problems of today and of tomorrow,” Professor Sheil said.
“I look forward to talking with universities and researchers about the policy settings they need to maintain Australia’s place in a highly-competitive global research environment.
“I’m pleased to work with my colleagues on the review committee as we bring together different perspectives and disciplines.”
Professor Susan Dodds is Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President Research and Industry Engagement from La Trobe University, and Professor Mark Hutchinson is Director of the Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide.
The ARC review committee will report back to the government in March 2023.
