More than 100 school students and parents have visited QUT’s Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses across three days in January for the launch of the university’s Get Uni Ready program.

This pilot initiative is designed to prepare young students for university study across a two-year program, and includes several on-campus days offering exposure to different faculties, in-school study support and mentoring, and career development workshops.

The QUT Widening Participation team hosted the Year 11 students, who came from 15 of the university’s partner schools.

They were welcomed by QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil, and also received some encouragement from the university's Explore Your Future ambassadors, who will act as mentors to the students across the two-year program.

The school students participated in arts and science activities led by QUT student ambassadors.

QUT’s acting Equity Director, Kate Flynn, said the three on-campus days in January focused on determining the students’ values and vision for the future and participating in creative arts and science activities.

“All student participants were nominated by their school and invited to apply for the program,” she said.

“The Get Uni Ready program will award each successful applicant with a laptop to support their senior school study, as well as a $100 Westfield voucher for study supplies.

“Once they’ve completed the program, participants will be eligible for QUT’s Early Offer Scheme, which provides entry into a range of QUT undergraduate degree programs.”

Get Uni Ready is part of QUT’s Widening Participation Program and will join a suite of other in-school and on-campus programs designed to support participation in university and TAFE.
