
QUT singers, dancers, actors and artists will be among the graduating creative industries students showcased at a series of public and private events through October, November and December.
The annual end-of-year School of Creative Practice showcases will kick off this week with events including QUT Music in Concert this Wednesday (October 26) – the graduating showcase for music students.
Held at QUT Gardens Theatre at Gardens Point campus, the evening will feature performances from final-year singers and groups, supported by first-year and second-year students.
The line-up includes The Graveyard Club, Hope Morrison, RYN, Kurai Verildis, Sam Stone, Harper Wren, Amy Marks, Love Street, Samichoux, Blue Diner, and Miima (all pictured above, clockwise from top left), and Thursday Maybe and Duck Egg Blue.
On October 23 and 24, students of dance, visual arts and drama will combine for MORE THAN HUMAN, an immersive event that will explore the boundaries between humans and technology and delight tech enthusiasts with its use of biofabrication, the digital twin, and other advancements in technology.
It will feature Bachelor of Fine Arts graduating students and be held in the Live Art Studio at 6pm and 7pm both evenings.
The university will also host Dance23 this week, featuring graduating dancers in shows at the Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove on October 26 and 27.
Four performances will be held across two evenings, showcasing the creative work of QUT's Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) students, alongside dance works present by students from QACI.
November will see the university’s graduating actors take to the stage when the School of Creative Practice presents JOAN MUST DIE* (* I Never Liked Her Anyway) under the direction of leading Australian playwright and artistic director Wesley Enoch.
Written by Daniel Evans, JOAN MUST DIE* will be on for four nights at Gardens Theatre from November 6.
Final-year Bachelor of Creative Industries students will show off their innovative projects at the Creative Enterprise Studio 3 Showcase on November 6 (6pm-8pm) on Level 5 of E Block on the upper QUT Kelvin Grove campus.
The event is the result of a collaborative effort between the students, in partnership with esteemed institutions including the Museum of Brisbane and Beyond Zero Emissions.
Back down on the lower campus, the Creative Industries Precinct will host the interaction design and visual communication graduate showcases on November 2 from 6pm to 9pm.
The same venue will roll out the red carpet again on the evening of November 15 for the fashion design and industrial design showcases.
From November 8 to 11 it will the visual arts students’ turn.
The 2023 QUT Visual Arts Graduate Exhibition, inFORM, will feature the work of 34 emerging artists graduating from QUT Visual Arts' unique Open Studio program.
Working across diverse media including moving image, installation, performance, painting, photography, sculpture and more, the artists of inFORM creatively and critically engage with the social, political, and personal conditions of our contemporary world.
The exhibition will be open to the public from November 8 to 11, from 10am to 6pm, at the QUT Visual Arts Gallery and Studios in Z12 at the Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove campus.
From November 7 to 9, technical production students will present their showcase, Standing By.
The exhibition will be held in Z9 at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct on Musk Avenue at Kelvin Grove from 10am to 4pm each day.
And on November 9, the Creative Writing Gala will recognise the university’s writers and present awards to outstanding students.
Animation and film and screen students will also present showcases in November and December.
Other upcoming events open to the public include an end-of-year concert by the QUT Music Society (QMuSo) End of Year Performance on November 2 at the Ron Hurley Theatre, featuring four sensational ensembles – the Blackbirds Big Band, QUT String Theory, QMuSo Orchestra, and QUT Concert Band.
The Head of the School of Creative Practice, Professor Damian Candusso, said the school would also be involved in two other major engagement events to round out the year and connect with the community.
“On November 3 we will host the Brisbane International Film Festival’s Industry Day Two at our Kelvin Grove campus, which will have a very topical theme – The Future Of Film And Television In A Dynamically Changing Landscape,” he said.
“The day will focus on engaging discussions about how the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes have changed the industry and how creative labour can be better recognised and rewarded – as well as a key focus on cutting-edge technology representing the future of the screen industry.
“And on November 21, we will welcome Year 9 and 10 students from high schools across south east Queensland for our School of Creative Practice Experience Day.
“This is a day of hands-on workshops and learning activities showcasing study in creative practices across acting, drama and production design, creative writing, dance, contemporary art, music, and film, screen and animation.”
