QUT Director of Sport and Olympian Emily Rosemond said the eight students representing Australia in Paris were all part of the university’s Elite Athlete Program.
“We are so excited to see them go to the 2024 Games and we know all of QUT will be behind them, with our students and staff cheering them on,” she said.
“It’s a big challenge combining study and elite sport and we applaud their efforts in making their national teams.
“Seven of our students will be competing at their very first Olympic or Paralympic Games – Nick, Sam, Lewis, Alice, Saskia, Reece and Loane.
“And Renee will be competing at her second Olympics, after also playing for the Hockeyroos in Tokyo.”
Ms Rosemond said QUT aimed to make university study viable for athletes by supporting them through their studies in a holistic manner.
“We are really committed to supporting their best performances by allowing them to balance their training and studies, while at the pinnacle of their sporting careers,” she said.
“The university’s faculty staff are fantastic in ensuring that, wherever possible, our student athletes have the flexibility they need with timetables, classes and assessments.
“And here at QUT Sport, our Elite Athlete Program team complements that faculty flexibility with learning options and support services that are holistic in their approach.
“We know how important it is to maintain a healthy balance, and ultimately achieving positive well-being which translates to success in sport, study and life.”
