Esports is already a billion-dollar industry, and its potential is still emerging – as QUT College students are finding within their Diploma in Esports.

Launched in 2022, the Diploma in Esports is the first and only qualification of its kind in Australia.

The diploma has 40 students currently enrolled, learning about topics including the practical and theoretical realms of esports, the impact of physical and mental health in the industry and esports business strategies.

Amy Winterbottom, currently enrolled in the Diploma in Esports, has always been passionate about the video game industry and has enjoyed the new perspective that the diploma has offered.

“The diploma of esports is an exciting and unique pathway that I haven’t seen anywhere else, and I’ve enjoyed learning about the community surrounding esports, including the teams, players, fans, everyone that’s part of the industry and how they work together,” Ms Winterbottom said.

“I plan to continue my studies at QUT in the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments and start my career in the game development industry.”

Craig Kerwin, Senior Educator for the Diploma in Esports and unit coordinator for the core esports units, has noted that the program provides a great opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and then come out with a tangible qualification they can add to their CV.

“This education and evidence provided by this program are vital to working in the industry,” Mr Kerwin said.

QUT College has worked closely with QUT Sport to provide opportunities for real world experience within the esports program.

“Our students are given the opportunity to be involved in events that are being hosted by the QUT sport team – which gives them valuable feedback as well as an insight into the kinds of roles that are becoming available,” Mr Kerwin said.

QUT esports coordinator Steve Window said that the connections to the diploma program is one of the many ways that the team is innovating and staying ahead of the game.

“We are positioned as the leader in the Australian esports industry, and we’re always looking at ways we can create a program that is more inclusive and connected,” Mr Window said.

QUT College has been offering premium pathways to university to international students for over three decades and since 2020 for domestic students.

QUT College Executive Director Ken Beutel said the college creates  a wonderful opportunity for all students to start their journey at QUT.

“Our Diploma in Esports allows students to expand their knowledge, and take their learning further with direct pathways into a range of bachelor degrees at QUT in business, creative industries, communication, games or information technology,” Mr Beutel said.

“Students who enrol in any of our diplomas will have access to all of the world class facilities at QUT and study in a highly supportive environment.”
