Academic Individual Awards

Peter Black, Faculty of Law

Over the past five years Peter has demonstrated exceptional leadership and community engagement in his advocacy for LGBTIQ equality. He has used his legal and policy expertise around law reform and LGBTIQ issues to work with community organisations to advance the rights of LGBTIQ people at both a national and state level.

Professor Jean Burgess, Creative Industries Faculty

Since 2015, Professor Jean Burgess has, as Director of the Digital Media Research Centre, developed the centre into one of the world’s best for research in its field. This reputation has put QUT in a position where we can compete for the very best international PhD students in the digital media space and collaborate with other leading institutions in industry and academia in Australia and overseas in largescale impactful research projects.

Associate Professor Gary Mortimer, QUT Business School

Gary Mortimer has demonstrated a sustained and continuous commitment to external engagement by facilitating relationships between industry and the QUT Business School. In 2014, Gary launched the Business Breakfasts series, which continues to provide a forum for academics to present current and important research, while creating dialog with external parties.

Dr Rachael Murray, Faculty of Health

 As a senior lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences, Dr Rachael Murray has worked above and beyond her duties to develop and embed the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program into the Bachelor of Biomedical Science and research practice at QUT. She has significantly strengthened the teaching-research nexus, benefiting the school and students, enabling students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in real scenarios, and strengthen technical competencies.

Professor Anthony O’Mullane, Science and Engineering Faculty

Anthony O’Mullane was the Enabling Platform Leader for Manufacturing with Advanced Materials from August 2016 to August 2017. He initiated the official launch of the platform and regular seminar series for distinguished visitors and QUT researchers, enabling the broader QUT community to appreciate the opportunity in Materials Science.

Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett, QUT Business School

For 13 years, Rebekah Russell-Bennett has coordinated QUTopia, the student marketplace in AMB240 Marketing Planning and Management. For QUTopia, students engage in authentic learning experiences by designing, selling and evaluating a (real) new product they take to market.

Associate Professor Makrina Totsika, Faculty of Health

Dr Makrina Totsika is a molecular microbiologist at the forefront of research to develop new therapies to beat multi-drug resistant bacteria. Dr Totsika is the recipient of an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (ARC DECRA) in 2013, and she has attracted funding from the Ramaciotti Foundation and NHMRC for her research investigating a new class of anti-infection drugs.

Professor Mia Woodruff, Science and Engineering Faculty

Mia is an outstanding researcher, contributing across all areas of academic activity in medical engineering in the school, faculty and QUT. She has an excellent track record in research with outstanding research income of over $4 million in the past five years, excellent publications (with over 30 per cent of her papers in the top 10 per cent of citations in her field).

Associate Professor Moe Thandar Wynn, Science and Engineering Faculty

Moe Wynn has contributed significantly to QUT through high-impact partner-focussed research in the area of Business Process Management (BPM). Together with her BPM discipline members, Moe is currently engaging with a wide range of partners including the Queensland Government Motor Accident Insurance Commission, Queensland Ambulance Service, Brisbane Airport Corporation, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia to identify improved business practices through data-driven methods.

Professional Individual Awards

Derek Cordwell, Faculty of Health

Derek Cordwell leads the Student and Teaching Support Team supporting high quality and efficient client services across the Faculty of Health. The team has a complex stakeholder range across students, academic and professional staff and the community. Under his leadership over the past three years, Derek has driven transformative change to create a nimble and responsive team.

Kaylene Matheson, Faculty of Law

Kaylene organises placements for Faculty of Law students within Australia and internationally. She was an early champion of the InPlace system to provide students with more control over their placements and to better manage risk for QUT and our placement partners. On her own initiative she has visited several key placement partners across Queensland and she has involved them in student events, such a ‘meet the profession’ morning teas.

Danielle Patterson, Faculty of Health

Danielle Patterson’s energy and enthusiasm is behind the significant growth in the Widening Participation Program for the Faculty of Health, and other community outreach activities benefiting both students from the QUT Health Clinics and the broader health disciplines, and the community. This includes working with the North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health through the annual Indigenous Well Persons Health Check Day.

Gary Rasmussen, Division of International and Development

Gary provides strategic leadership in developing and improving internal and external partnerships and engagement in the Science and Engineering Centre (SEC) and QUT Precincts. He supports the integration and development of learning and teaching, research and community engagement, fostering innovation and best practice in the SEC and Precincts.

Community Partner Awards

Adjunct Professor Robert Flower, Faculty of Health

Adjunct Professor Robert Flower is a team leader at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, managing four large R&D teams focused on enhanced outcomes for transfusion. As an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health he has been instrumental in the success of ARC and other Linkage projects worth more than $810,000 funding.

Dr Mandy Paterson, RSPCA Queensland

Dr Mandy Paterson has, for more than six years, served as a volunteer to QUT’s University Animal Ethics Committee (UAEC). As a registered veterinarian, she brings a rigorous and impactful scientific and veterinary perspective to her role when assessing how animals are used in research.

Academic Team Award

QUT Nursing Professorial Precincts Team, Faculty of Health

Strong relationships with our industry partners at Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS) has led this team to establish four Nursing Professorial Precincts in cancer care, critical care, kidney care and neurology/stroke nursing, to conduct research and to facilitate innovative evidence-based practice, and new models of care.

Awards and Grants, Chancellery

The Awards and Grants Team has made an exceptional and sustained contribution to QUT’s reputation for innovation, quality and excellence in learning and teaching through providing end to end developmental support and expert guidance to QUT’s award and grant applicants. The impact of the team’s contribution is demonstrated in QUT’s outstanding national and global profile.

International Student Counselling Team, Division of International and Development

This group of professional social workers and psychologists play an essential role in supporting international students at QUT. The strength of the team is their ability to work together and cooperatively across the university to find solutions to problems faced by students.

The reception team at the QUT Health Clinic is in the exciting position of supporting a high quality clinic with a strong and rising demand for its services. Reception staff have been required to be flexible with changing systems of operation to allow for this growth.

Mixed Team Award

Design Robotics Research Team, Creative Industries Faculty, Science and Engineering Faculty

In 2017, the Design Robotics Research Team secured a five-year $3 million (cash) $8 million (valued) Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre project; “Design Robotics for Mass Customisation Manufacturing” with industry partner UAP (Urban Art Projects) and RMIT. The Design Robotics project is an outstanding example of collaborative multi-university transdisciplinary research and industry partner engagement.

Community Partner Team Awards

C&K Association

C&K is one of the largest and longest-standing providers of early childhood education and care in Queensland, whose purpose is to guide children’s learning journey and maximise their life outcomes. They have demonstrated outstanding commitment to partnerships with QUT across teaching, research, and engagement over the past decade, resulting in numerous real-world impacts for the early childhood field and strategic benefits to the Faculty of Education.

Marsden State High School

Marsden State High School has been working closely with QUT in developing classroom ready graduates for over a decade, placing nearly 300 students. Marsden SHS continues this support through an innovative approach to the development of beginning teachers through an intensive school induction program.

The David Gardiner QUT Teacher of the Year Award

Dr Deb Duthie, Faculty of Health

Dr Deb Duthie is an outstanding teacher in Indigenous knowledges at QUT. Her teaching involves authentic and innovative approaches to facilitate student engagement utilising a deep appreciation of the politics of knowledge. Additionally, Dr Duthie has a lead role in an ongoing collaboration between QUT and the Cherbourg Aboriginal community in terms of work integrated learning. This collaboration involves groups of students from varied disciplines across QUT undertaking community-initiated projects, such as youth justice, first aid training and health and safety.
