What is the purpose of this research?

This study aims to test the design of a new type of bushfire map that includes predictions of bushfire spread. In the project, we are trying to determine which design is easiest to understand and whether the new map helps residents to identify which protective actions to take.

Are you looking for people like me?

We are looking for participants with every background, whether they like maps (or not) or have experience with maps (or not). The only requirements are that you are aged 18 or over and can attend the study location at the Gardens Point campus. We also need to ask you a few questions to make sure you don't have a few (rare) eye conditions that make it hard for our equipment to see your eyes.

What will you ask me to do?

We will ask you to look at two maps and to imagine yourself in a particular situation. We'll ask you to tell us what the map is telling you, whether you find any part of the map confusing, and what you would do in the situation the map depicts. We will also be recording where you look at on the map and what you do with the map (zoom, pan, click). We will also ask you some questions about your demographics and experience to make sure we are hearing from a wide range of people in the study.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

The risks include the potential to experience mild anxiety because of recalling your past experience during bushfires or seeing and discussing a hypothetical bushfire event. If you are concerned that recalling past experience with bushfires or talking about bushfires may cause you distress, then you may prefer to not participate in this study.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

We cannot guarantee or promise that you will receive any benefits from this research; however, you may appreciate contributing to knowledge. Other possible benefits may include helping the community to stay safe from bushfires by helping bushfire response agency staff to more effectively tell community members about bushfire risks they are facing.

Will I be compensated for my time?

In acknowledgement of your time, we are offering a $50 grocery store gift card.

I am interested - what should I do next?

Fill in the screening questionnaire

Undertake a screening questionnaire that asks about your age and eyes. If you meet the study requirements, you can immediately book a study time within that questionnaire. The screening questionnaire should take about two minutes to complete.
