What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this study is to explore and identify factors that contribute to people’s goals for interacting with others on social media. This research aims to understand further what leads to differences in psychological processes that guide social media behaviours.

Are you looking for people like me?

You are invited to participate in this study if you are:

  • an Instagram user who posts (e.g., stories, feed posts or reels) at least once a fortnight
  • between 18-34 years old
  • haven’t participated in the interview study: Exploring Interpersonal Goal Adoption and Pursuit on Social Media.

What will you ask me to do?

Participation in this study requires the completion of a 121-item online questionnaire. The questionnaire will include a few demographic questions, such as your age and gender identity, as well as questions surrounding individual factors like how you feel about yourself and others, gratitude, belonging, your goals for interacting with others on Instagram and your posting intentions on Instagram. The questionnaire should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

There are minimal risks associated with your participation in this research project. You may experience some discomfort from answering some questions; however, you can exit the survey at any time. All answers remain anonymous and unidentifiable. You may also experience inconvenience from the time used to complete the survey. However, you can complete the survey anytime and in a location that suits you.

Additionally, contact details will be provided for QUT’s limited free psychology, family therapy or counselling services for research participants of QUT research projects who may experience discomfort or distress as a result of their participation in the research.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

This research project is expected not to benefit you directly other than a sense of satisfaction for contributing to research. The outcomes of this research, however, may assist in developing knowledge and understanding of how people use and experience social media. Therefore, findings will be relevant to scholars in psychology and communication, as well as society.

Will I be compensated for my time?

To recognise your contribution, should you choose to participate, the research team is offering the opportunity to enter a prize draw for a chance to win 1 of 4 $50 Giftpay e-gift cards that can be redeemed at a select list of 100+ retailers (e.g., Close, Myer). Alternatively, participants who are QUT students enrolled in PYB100 or PYB102 can either receive 0.5 course credits or opt into the prize draw.
