Overview

This project seeks to map new developments in trade and investment law in the Asia-Pacific

Research activities

Professor Matthew Rimmer is interested in the supervision of students in the field of international trade and investment law.

His areas of expertise include the multilateral regime of the World Trade Organization, regional agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP, CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the PACER Agreement, plurilateral trade proposals such as the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) and bilateral trade agreements like the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement, the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement, and the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement.

Rimmer is particularly focused on the relationship between trade, innovation, and intellectual property - looking at the TRIPS Agreement and other IP-related trade agreements.

He is also interested in investor-state dispute settlement, and its implications for judicial decision-making and government regulatory autonomy.
