Overview

Decreasing water quality is negativtly impacting coral reefs globally and is a threat that can be actively managed.

Research activities

Timor-Leste is a young country with denuded landscapes after decades of logging. This results in sedimentation flowing onto nearshore coastal habitats such as coral reefs following rain events. This project will use Google Earth Engine to quantify the area and extent of sedimentation along the north coast of Timor-Leste.

Outcomes

The aim of this project is to assess the changes in the amount of sedimentation along the north coast of TImor-Leste through time and investigate the effect of oceanographic processes (currents) on the distribution of sediments. Additional aim is to investigate land-sea conservation scenarios to improve water quality.

Skills and experience

Coding experience required - R, python, etc. - Google Earth Engine uses Javascript so student just be familiar with Javascript or able to learn.
