Overview

Air travel is poised for systemic transformation due to the advent and implementation of emerging technologies. For example, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft have the potential to deliver sustainable, efficient, and fast, short-range mobility in urban environments. Advances in fuel and propulsion systems, such as those used in hydrogen electric aircraft, could have broader impact, delivering aspirations of zero carbon aviation.

Given the nascent qualities of such technology advances, it is unclear how they will affect passenger experience. Currently, air travel passenger experience is characterised by large, centralised airports with lengthy processing stages. New technologies create the opportunity to challenge the status quo and reimagine passenger experience for a new age of air travel.

Research activities

The purpose of this research is to explore emerging aviation technology and other advances in the aviation sector to understand their impact on future air travel passenger experience.

The objectives of this project are:

  • to evaluate the impact that emerging technologies and other trends in the aviation sector could have on air travel passenger experience
  • to generate future scenarios, which identify key driving forces in the aviation sector, and outline opportunities for a new air travel passenger experience.
