Overview
Developing sustainable and clean energy sources (e.g., solar, wind, and tide energy) is essential to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Due to the discontinuous and inconsistent nature of common clean energy sources, high-performance energy storage technologies are a critical part of achieving this target. Aqueous zinc metal batteries with inherent safety, low cost, and competitive performance are regarded as one of the promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage. However, zinc metal anodes with irreversible problems of dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, self-corrosion, and other side reactions have seriously hindered the development of aqueous zinc metal batteries.
Research activities
You will work with members of the School of Chemistry and Physics and the Centre for Materials Science researchers.
The work is expected to involve:
- rechargeable battery cell assembly
- applying electrochemical testing techniques
- data analysis and reporting.
The work will also provide exposure to
- a range of battery testing equipment
- battery materials synthesis
- battery materials characterisation.
Outcomes
The aim is to determine the performance, and suitability for purpose, of novel separators for aqueous zinc metal batteries.
Skills and experience
A background in chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics is highly preferred but all interested applicants are encouraged to send an enquiry email describing their motivation and suitability.
