Keeping carbon – ensuring soil carbon gains through improved grazing management persist through drought in Australia's tropical and semi-arid grasslands
Drought is the biggest barrier to sequestering soil organic carbon (SOC) in soils over the long-term. While options are limited during dry periods, how we manage our pastures prior to drought can influence the resilience of SOC to losses and enhance recovery.

Investigating DNA repair mechanisms in aging adult stem cells
When we age the DNA repair systems of our cells become down regulated. This results in reduced DNA repair capacity, enhanced rates of mutation load and may lead to the development of chronic aging-associated diseases including osteoporosis, Alzheimer's and cancer(1). So it is no surprise that genome instability and stem cell exhaustion, which also strongly correlates with the accumulation of DNA damage, are considered hallmarks of aging(2).However, we still lack a clear understanding on how the decrease in DNA repair …

Computational communication and culture
The Computational Communication and Culture research program within the Digital Media Research Centre investigates how rapid advances in computation and human-machine communication are transforming society, through automation and AI, the Internet of Things, and disintermediating technologies such as blockchain. We draw on and extend computer science and critical humanities theory and methods (including agent-based modelling, machine vision, critical simulation, and information visualisation) to help explore and explain emergent phenomena in the digital media environment, including the fundamental transformation of communication …

Using agricultural waste and organic amendments for sustainable agriculture and soil health
Optimising the application rates of organic amendments in agricultural soils is one of the most promising and practical solutions to reduce nitrogen (N) losses into the environment while maintaining an economically-adequate crop production.Organic amendments alone often don't meet the crop's needs. Consequently, a supplementary application of N synthetic fertiliser is needed in conventional farming systems to meet perceived production needs.Accounting for the amount of plant-available N (PAN) released by organic amendments and combining this with N-fertiliser will:ensure N demands of …

Enhancing wellbeing of youth from culturally diverse and refugee backgrounds
Australia has a multicultural population, with approximately 30% of the population from diverse backgrounds. We will propose a program of research encompassing the development of assessment processes and also interventions, addressing the diverse needs of this population, Proposed research will build upon work already undertaken by the team in collaboration with Education Queensland including Milpera State School. Methodologies to date have been broadly based, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches. These have included the examination of psychometric properties of scales …

Better an iceberg or a penguin? Relative importance of cultural ecosystem services in Antarctica
The tourism industry is rapidly expanding in Antarctica, increasing by an order of magnitude over the past two decades. The resilience of this industry depends on the resilience of the Antarctic ecosystem but which element of Antarctica is the most important? Is it better a penguin or an iceberg? The proposed study will make use of social media channels to collect data on Antarctica tourism. By assessing photos’ captions and Twitter hashtags, the study aims to determine how frequently terms such …

Critical, historical, social or cultural examinations of law and technology
Continuing my 25 years of researching law and technology and growing an international research community on law, technology and humanities, I strongly welcome PhD students wanting to think more deeply about law and technology. I especially encourage projects drawing upon critical and theoretical perspectives, historical examinations, socio-legal methods, or drawing upon cultural legal studies. In addition to students studying emerging technologies, I also encourage projects looking at legacy or everyday technologies.
